S355J0H Steel to EN 10219 Introduction
S355J0H is a weldable fine‑grain structural steel grade defined in EN 10219‑1 for cold‑formed welded structural hollow sections. It belongs to the S355 family and offers a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa with enhanced low‑temperature toughness, designated by the J0 suffix (minimum 27 J at 0 °C).
The grade is delivered in the normalized (+N) or as‑rolled (+AR) condition and is extensively used for circular, square and rectangular hollow profiles, including spiral submerged arc welded (SSAW) pipes.
Its balanced chemistry ensures excellent weldability, good formability and reliable performance in static and dynamically loaded structures. Typical applications cover building frameworks, bridges, offshore modules, machinery components and infrastructure projects where high strength and good ductility are required.

S355J0H Steel to EN 10219 Mechanical Properties
The mechanical properties are determined on test specimens taken from the finished hollow section in the longitudinal direction. Yield strength depends on wall thickness; minimum values for the most common thickness ranges are listed. The tensile strength range applies to all thicknesses. Minimum elongation A5 (L0=5,65√S0) is given for longitudinal specimens. The Charpy V‑notch impact energy is guaranteed at 0 °C (J0 quality). Bend test requirements are specified for finished hollow sections when ordered as such.

Notes:
- Welding: S355J0H has excellent weldability using all common arc processes (SMAW, GMAW, SAW). Low‑hydrogen procedures are recommended for thicknesses above 30 mm. Pre‑heating is generally not required for t ≤ 30 mm when using basic consumables.
- SSAW specific: Spiral submerged arc welded pipes made from S355J0H steel are often subject to supplementary non‑destructive testing (ultrasonic or radiographic) for critical structural applications. The weld seam must meet the same properties as the base material.
- Corrosion protection: The material can be hot‑dip galvanized or painted after appropriate surface preparation. The silicon content (<0,55 %) is compatible with modern galvanizing processes.
- Availability: Hollow sections are widely available from European mills and many international producers certified to EN 10219. SSAW pipes are produced up to large diameters (typically 219 mm to over 3000 mm) with wall thicknesses from 5 mm up to about 25 mm or more.
