JIS G4305 SUS310S Austenitic Stainless Steel for High-Temperature Service Introduction

JIS G4305 SUS310S is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel with excellent oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength. It contains approximately 25% chromium and 20% nickel, offering superior performance in continuous service up to 1150°C and intermittent service to 1035°C. The low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation, enhancing resistance to intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition. This grade is typically supplied in the solution-annealed condition and is widely used for furnace components, heat treatment equipment, and thermal processing applications where both heat and corrosion resistance are critical.

JIS G4305 SUS310S Austenitic Stainless Steel for High-Temperature Service Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of SUS310S as per JIS G4305 ensures a fully austenitic structure with high Cr and Ni for superior oxidation resistance. The low carbon content (max 0.08%) prevents sensitization and intergranular corrosion after welding.

JIS G4305 SUS310S Austenitic Stainless Steel for High-Temperature Service Application Introduction

SUS310S is engineered for elevated-temperature service where resistance to oxidation, sulfidation, and carburization is required. It is not recommended for applications involving frequent thermal cycling or heavy aqueous corrosion at ambient temperatures. Typical applications:

  • Furnace parts: burners, retorts, muffles, annealing covers
  • Heat exchangers and radiant tubes in petrochemical and power plants
  • Kiln and boiler components
  • Food processing equipment (dry, high-temperature areas)
  • Aerospace hot-section parts (limited)

Product Applications: Radiant tubes and heater tubes, Annealing boxes and bell-type furnace covers, Combustion chambers and burner nozzles, Recuperator tubes, Hot gas ducts and liners, Rotary kiln components, Thermal oxidizer parts

Processed into products: Welded furnace pipes and headers, Fasteners for high-temperature bolting, Expansion joints and bellows (thin gauge), Flame impingement shields, Support brackets and hangers in furnaces, Nozzle mix burners, Corrugated sheets for heat recuperators

Application industries: Heat treatment and furnace manufacturing, Chemical and petrochemical processing, Power generation (coal, gas, nuclear), Steel and non-ferrous metal production, Cement and ceramics, Food processing (high-temperature baking/drying), Aerospace (exhaust components)

Country / RegionStandardGradeRemarks
USAASTM A240310 (S31000)Higher carbon (max 0.25%); lower creep strength, more prone to sensitization
USAASTM A240S30815 (253 MA)Contains N and Ce; superior oxidation resistance to 1150°C, higher yield strength
EUEN 10088-21.4841 (X15CrNiSi25-21)Higher carbon and silicon; used for heat-resistant castings, not equivalent
Europe / USAEN / ASTM1.4876 / 800H (UNS N08810)Nickel-iron-chromium alloy; superior carburization resistance, higher cost
ChinaGB/T 423706Cr23Ni13 (309S)Lower Cr (23%) and Ni (13%); suitable for less oxidizing environments, lower cost

Notes:

Welding: SUS310S has excellent weldability using matching filler metals (e.g., AWS E310-15/16) without preheating. Post-weld annealing is generally not required for corrosion resistance, but may be performed to relieve stresses. Oxidation resistance: Service above 950°C may lead to sigma phase formation, reducing toughness. Continuous and steady temperature application maximizes life. Forming: Solution-annealed material is readily formed; however, work hardening rate is higher than low-alloy steels. Availability: Typically supplied in thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 50 mm for sheet/plate; pipes in schedules 5S to 80S as per JIS or ASTM dimensions.
