GB/T 1591 Q420D SSAW Pipe Material HSLA Steel Introduction
Q420D is a high-strength low-alloy structural steel defined in Chinese standard GB/T 1591-2018. It offers a minimum yield strength of 420 MPa and good low-temperature impact toughness at -20°C, making it suitable for demanding welded structures such as SSAW (spiral submerged arc welded) pipes. Key characteristics:
- Fine-grain killed steel with controlled rolling or normalizing delivery condition
- Excellent weldability and formability for pipe manufacturing
- Used extensively in oil and gas transmission pipelines, offshore structures, and heavy-duty civil engineering

GB/T 1591 Q420D SSAW Pipe Material HSLA Steel Mechanical Properties
Mechanical properties are specified for flat products before forming into pipe. Requirements depend on nominal thickness. For SSAW pipes, the pipe body mechanical properties shall meet the base material values after manufacturing, although slight variations may occur. Impact toughness is guaranteed at -20°C for D-grade.
- Bend test requires no cracks on the outer surface after 180° bending.

Notes:
When producing SSAW pipes from Q420D coils, the manufacturing process should follow applicable pipe standards such as GB/T 9711, API 5L PSL1/PSL2, or ISO 3183. Attention to heat input during welding and the carbon equivalent value is essential to maintain heat-affected zone toughness. Post-weld heat treatment is normally not required for thicknesses up to 25 mm, but stress relieving may be applied for thicker wall pipes or specific service conditions. The typical SSAW pipe outside diameter ranges from 219 mm to over 3500 mm, and wall thickness from 5 mm to 25 mm commonly, utilizing Q420D hot-rolled coils.
