FH32 SSAW Pipe Introduction

FH32 SSAW pipe is manufactured from FH32 high-strength shipbuilding steel plates formed into a spiral submerged arc welded (SSAW) pipe. FH32 is a grade of structural steel for ship hulls with minimum yield strength of 315 MPa and designated for service temperatures down to -60 °C (F-grade). The steel is produced according to classification society rules, commonly ABS (American Bureau of Shipping), and is characterized by fine grain practice and strict control of chemical composition, especially carbon equivalent, to ensure excellent weldability and good notch toughness at low temperatures. The SSAW manufacturing process allows producing large-diameter pipes with consistent wall thickness, suitable for demanding applications in offshore structures, marine piles, and fluid transmission pipelines.

FH32 SSAW Pipe Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of FH32 is tightly controlled to achieve the required mechanical properties and weldability. The values below are typical limits according to ABS Rules. Additional alloying elements such as Nb, V, Ti may be added for grain refinement. Limits are expressed as maximum unless a range is given.

Notes:

  • SSAW pipe made from FH32 steel may be supplied with mill test certificates (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2) including chemical and mechanical test results.
  • Welding of FH32 SSAW pipe requires low hydrogen processes and preheat/interpass control to avoid cold cracking. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required for thicknesses < 50 mm when proper procedures are followed.
  • For sour service applications, FH32 chemistry may need to be modified to meet HIC (Hydrogen Induced Cracking) requirements. Project-specific qualifications are required.
  • The physical properties provided are typical reference values for structural steel. Actual values may vary slightly with heat treatment and composition. For critical design, material-specific data should be obtained from the supplier.
