S355K2G1W is ideal for welded structures exposed to the atmosphere where a natural protective rust layer (patina) can form, reducing maintenance. It is suitable for all conventional fabrication processes. In aggressive environments (marine, heavy industrial) additional painting or inspection may be required. Preheating for welding is rarely needed for thinner sections; when required, follow the recommendations for Z-grade structural steels.

- S355K2G1W is fully killed and normally fine-grain treated; thus it can be welded with common methods (SMAW, GMAW, SAW) using matching weathering steel electrodes (e.g., AWS E80C-Ni1 or equivalent).
- The atmospheric corrosion resistance relies on a stable oxide layer; the steel should not be painted unless the environment prevents patina formation (e.g., high chloride exposure).
- For thicknesses above 100 mm, special agreement with the manufacturer is required for mechanical properties.
