EN10155 S355K2G1W Weather Resistant Steel Coil Introduction

S355K2G1W is a structural steel grade defined in the European standard EN 10155:1993, designed for improved atmospheric corrosion resistance (weathering steel). It belongs to the group of weldable fine-grain structural steels with specified minimum yield strength of 355 MPa at room temperature and guaranteed impact toughness at -20°C (K2 quality, min 40 J). The 'G1' suffix indicates a fully killed steel with specific aluminium content for fine-grain practice. Typical applications include bridges, buildings, containers, and outdoor structures where reduced maintenance and enhanced durability against corrosion are required. This grade is typically supplied in the normalised or controlled-rolled condition.

EN10155 S355K2G1W Weather Resistant Steel Coil Chemical Composition

The chemical composition conforms to the requirements of EN 10155:1993 for S355K2G1W. The steel contains deliberate additions of copper and chromium to provide enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance. Aluminium is present as a grain-refining element to ensure fine-grain practice.

EN10155 S355K2G1W Weather Resistant Steel Coil Application Introduction

S355K2G1W is ideal for welded structures exposed to the atmosphere where a natural protective rust layer (patina) can form, reducing maintenance. It is suitable for all conventional fabrication processes. In aggressive environments (marine, heavy industrial) additional painting or inspection may be required. Preheating for welding is rarely needed for thinner sections; when required, follow the recommendations for Z-grade structural steels.

Product Applications: Welded bridge girders and box sections, Weathering steel facade panels, Shipping containers and truck trailers, Transmission line poles and lattice towers, Architectural sculptures and landscape structures, Industrial storage tanks and silos

Processed into products: Bridge main beams, cross girders, and stiffeners, Welded rectangular hollow sections (RHS) for building columns, Pressed and folded plates for container walls, Lattice mast legs and base plates, Bent plates for architectural elements, Machined anchor plates and bearing pads

Application industries: Bridge construction, Building and civil engineering, Railway rolling stock and freight containers, Transmission and telecommunication towers, Architectural cladding and sculptures, Offshore wind towers (secondary structures), Mining and heavy equipment

Notes:

  • When using EN 10155:1993, note that this standard has been withdrawn and replaced by EN 10025-5. For new designs, the successor grade S355K2W+N should be specified.
  • S355K2G1W is fully killed and normally fine-grain treated; thus it can be welded with common methods (SMAW, GMAW, SAW) using matching weathering steel electrodes (e.g., AWS E80C-Ni1 or equivalent).
  • The atmospheric corrosion resistance relies on a stable oxide layer; the steel should not be painted unless the environment prevents patina formation (e.g., high chloride exposure).
  • For thicknesses above 100 mm, special agreement with the manufacturer is required for mechanical properties.
