EN10025-5 S355J2W Weather Resistant Steel Coil Introduction
EN10025-5 S355J2W is a structural steel with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance (weathering steel), widely used in exposed applications. Its controlled alloying with chromium, copper and nickel forms a dense, adherent patina that protects against further corrosion, often eliminating the need for painting. With a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa for thickness ≤ 16 mm and guaranteed impact energy of 27 J at -20°C (J2), it offers a balanced combination of strength, toughness and corrosion durability. Typical delivery condition is hot-rolled or normalized rolled. It is suitable for welded, bolted and riveted structures in bridges, buildings, containers and railway vehicles.

The chemical composition of S355J2W as specified in EN 10025-5:2004. The alloying elements Cu, Cr and Ni are added to achieve enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance. The maximum carbon content is limited to ensure good weldability. Values are ladle analysis percentages by mass.

EN10025-5 S355J2W Weather Resistant Steel Coil Application Introduction
S355J2W is ideally suited for load-bearing structures exposed to the atmosphere, where the natural patina provides long-term corrosion protection without maintenance painting. It can be processed by hot forming, cold forming, and all common welding techniques (preheating may be required for thicker sections). The material is not intended for use in aggressive chemical or marine immersion environments without additional protection.

Notes:
For thicknesses > 150 mm the mechanical properties shall be agreed at the time of enquiry and order. The improved atmospheric corrosion resistance is based on the formation of a protective oxide layer (patina) that develops under wet/dry cycles. In permanently wet conditions or in contact with de-icing salts, the patina may not form properly and additional coating is advised. The J2 classification guarantees a minimum Charpy impact energy of 27 J at -20°C; for lower temperature applications consider J2 or K2 grades. All data refer to the EN 10025-5 standard and represent the minimum requirements; actual mill certificates may show higher values.
