EH40 SSAW Pipe Steel Introduction

EH40 is a high-strength hull structural steel grade specifically designed for shipbuilding and offshore engineering, exhibiting a minimum yield strength of 390 MPa and excellent low-temperature toughness down to -40°C. It is commonly supplied as plates and coils that are subsequently formed into SSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded) pipes through a continuous helical forming and welding process.
This grade is governed by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) Unified Requirement W31 and is recognized by all major marine classification societies (ABS, DNV, LR, BV, CCS, etc.). It features a fine-grain microstructure achieved through controlled rolling or thermomechanical control processing (TMCP), ensuring a balanced combination of strength, ductility, and weldability. The low carbon equivalent (Ceq ≤ 0.40%) facilitates excellent field weldability, which is critical for large-diameter SSAW pipes used in demanding marine environments.
EH40 is primarily utilized in the construction of ship hulls, offshore platform structures, and submarine or onshore pipelines where high structural integrity and resistance to brittle fracture are essential. Its enhanced properties make it suitable for delivery conditions such as TMCP, normalized, or quenched and tempered (for heavier gauges), meeting the rigorous demands of both engineering and classification standards.

EH40 SSAW Pipe Steel Chemical Composition Requirements

The following chemical composition limits are defined by IACS UR W31 for EH40 steel with thickness ≤ 50 mm. Slight variations may exist among classification societies. The steel is fully killed with aluminum and micro-alloyed with Nb, V, and Ti to achieve fine grain refinement. Carbon equivalent (Ceq) is typically required to be ≤ 0.40% to ensure good weldability.

EH40 SSAW Pipe Steel Mechanical Properties

The mechanical properties listed below are based on IACS UR W31 requirements for EH40 steel plates/strips intended for SSAW pipe applications (thickness ≤ 50 mm). Testing is performed at ambient temperature unless otherwise noted. Charpy V-notch impact tests are conducted at -40°C to ensure notch toughness in low-temperature service. Transverse impact values are typically lower than longitudinal ones due to rolling directionality.

EH40 SSAW Pipe Steel Application Introduction

EH40 SSAW pipe steel is specifically designed for large-diameter welded pipes used in demanding marine and structural applications. The plate is rolled and then spirally formed and welded into pipes with diameters typically ranging from 21.3 mm to 2540 mm. The combination of high strength, excellent toughness at -40°C, and good weldability makes it a preferred choice for:

Product Applications: SSAW (spiral submerged arc welded) pipes for structural and mechanical applications, Ship hulls, decks, and structural members, Offshore platform legs, jackets, and braces, Submarine pipelines and risers, Piling and foundation pipes for harbors and bridges, Penstocks and waterway pipes for hydroelectric projects

Processed into products: Pipe body segments (lengths up to 12 m or more), Pipe fittings (elbows, tees, reducers), Flanges and connectors, Structural tubular joints (K-joints, T-joints), Supports and brackets for offshore structures, Welded stiffeners and ring flanges

Application industries: Shipbuilding and marine engineering, Offshore oil & gas exploration and production, Civil and infrastructure construction (bridges, piling), Subsea and onshore pipeline transmission, Renewable energy (offshore wind turbine foundations)

Notes:

Additional Requirements for EH40 SSAW Pipe:

  • The base steel shall be manufactured from fully killed, fine-grain practice and typically delivered in TMCP condition to achieve the required strength and toughness.
  • For pipes intended for sour service or HIC (Hydrogen Induced Cracking) resistance, special chemistry modifications (e.g., very low S, controlled Ca treatment) and through-thickness property testing (Z-quality, e.g., Z35) may be specified.
  • The weld seam of the SSAW pipe is fully inspected by non-destructive testing (ultrasonic test, radiographic test) and mechanical tests (tensile, bend, impact) in accordance with the applicable piping standard (e.g., API 5L PSL2, EN 10219).
  • Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is generally not required for EH40 steel due to its low carbon equivalent; however, it can be applied if specified.
