DIN17102 WStE380 Introduction

WStE380 is a normalized, weldable fine-grain structural steel specified in DIN 17102. With a minimum yield strength of 380 MPa for thicknesses up to 16 mm, it offers a balanced combination of strength, toughness, and excellent weldability. It is intended for welded constructions subject to dynamic loads and low-temperature service. The steel is fully killed and fine-grain treated (with Al, Nb, V or Ti) to ensure good toughness. Typical applications include

The material is delivered in the normalized condition (N) or, upon agreement, in thermomechanically rolled condition (M).

The fine-grain treatment ensures resistance to brittle fracture. Typical uses include:

Notes:

WStE380 has been superseded by EN 10025-3 for new designs, but the designation is still used in maintenance and existing projects. When ordering, the required delivery condition (+N or +M), impact temperature grade (-20°C or -50°C), and product analysis tolerances should be specified. Preheating for welding is generally not required for plate thicknesses below 30 mm, provided low-hydrogen processes are used. Post-weld heat treatment (stress relieving) may be applied at 530-600°C. The CEV (carbon equivalent) is typically below 0.45%, ensuring good weldability without cracking risk.
