DIN 17175 17Mn4 Seamless Boiler & Pressure Tube Introduction

17Mn4 is a low-carbon manganese steel grade originally specified in the German standard DIN 17175 for seamless steel tubes used in elevated temperature service, particularly in boilers, pressure vessels, and piping systems. The alloy features a controlled manganese content to improve hot strength and is supplied in the normalized condition. It offers a good balance of tensile strength, yield strength, and ductility up to moderate temperatures. Although DIN 17175 has been withdrawn and replaced by EN 10216-2, the legacy 17Mn4 material is still referenced in many engineering projects. Its typical microstructure of ferrite and pearlite provides reliable weldability and forming capabilities, making it suitable for steam and water applications in power plants and industrial boilers.

DIN 17175 17Mn4 Seamless Boiler & Pressure Tube Chemical Composition According to DIN 17175

The chemical composition of 17Mn4 is designed to provide enhanced tensile properties compared to plain carbon steels. The manganese content (1.0–1.4%) is the key alloying element for hot strength. Residual elements are restricted to ensure adequate ductility and toughness. Values shown are heat analysis limits. Product analysis tolerances may apply.

DIN 17175 17Mn4 Seamless Boiler & Pressure Tube Mechanical Properties

The mechanical properties are specified for room temperature tensile testing of full section tubes or strip samples. For thick-walled tubes, the yield strength may decrease with increasing wall thickness. Values given are for wall thickness ≤ 16 mm. The elongation is measured on a gauge length of 5.65√So (L0=5d for round specimens). Impact testing is not a mandatory requirement in DIN 17175 but may be agreed upon.

DIN 17175 17Mn4 Seamless Boiler & Pressure Tube Application Introduction

17Mn4 boiler tubes are intended for pressure-containing parts at elevated temperatures. Normalizing provides a uniform fine-grain structure suitable for hot or cold forming and welding. When used above its design temperature range, replacement or upgrade to creep-resistant steels (e.g., 16Mo3) must be considered. Modern EN 10216-2 P275N tubes can be used as direct substitutes with identical nominal dimensions.

Product Applications: Water wall tubes, Economizer tubes, Superheater and reheater tubes (up to ~400°C), Steam drums and headers (attached piping), High-pressure boiler pipelines

Processed into products: Seamless boiler tubes (OD 21.3 – 610 mm, wall thickness 2 – 100 mm), Tube panels (welded membrane walls), Coiled tube bundles, Reducing fittings and branch connections, Flanges and elbows fabricated from tube stock

Application industries: Thermal power plants (coal, gas, oil), Industrial boiler manufacturing, Petrochemical and refinery high-temperature piping, Heat exchanger fabricators, Cogeneration and combined cycle plants

Notes:

  • The DIN 17175 standard has been officially withdrawn and replaced by EN 10216-2. Users should verify if P275N is acceptable for the design code.
  • For service above 400 °C, the allowable stress values may decline; refer to the applicable pressure vessel code.
  • Welding consumables should match the base metal strength (E48XX or equivalent).
  • Hydrostatic testing and nondestructive testing are mandatory per the delivery specification.
