ASTM A537 Class 2 Pressure Vessel Steel Plate Introduction

ASTM A537 Class 2 (A537CL2) is a heat-treated carbon-manganese-silicon steel plate produced by quenching and tempering, intended for fusion-welded pressure vessels and boilers. It offers a minimum yield strength of 415 MPa (60 ksi) and tensile strength of 550–690 MPa (80–100 ksi) for thicknesses up to 65 mm, with excellent notch toughness at low temperatures. The steel provides good weldability and formability under controlled procedures, making it suitable for moderate- and low-temperature service. Typical applications include storage tanks, process columns, and boiler drums in the petrochemical and power generation sectors.

ASTM A537 Class 2 Pressure Vessel Steel Plate Application Introduction

ASTM A537 Class 2 is extensively used in the fabrication of welded pressure vessels and boilers requiring high strength with good low-temperature toughness. It is suitable for moderate- and low-temperature environments typical of the oil & gas, chemical, and power generation sectors. Components are often post-weld heat treated (PWHT) to relieve stresses.

Product Applications: Spherical and cylindrical storage tanks (LPG, ammonia, propylene), Boiler drums and steam separators, Heat exchangers and condensers, Process columns and reactors, High-pressure pipelines and pig launchers/receivers

Processed into products: Shell plates and formed heads, Tube sheets and baffle plates, Nozzle flanges and reinforcement pads, Manway covers and handhole plates, Pressure vessel internals (e.g., trays, supports)

Application industries: Oil and gas processing, Petrochemical and chemical plants, Power generation (boilers and steam drums), Cryogenic storage and transportation, Shipbuilding (LPG/LEG cargo tanks)

EUEN 10028-3P460NL1Q&T; YS ≥460 MPa, TS 570–720 MPa, slightly higher strength, excellent low-temp toughness
JapanJIS G3115SPV450QQuenched and tempered; YS ≥450 MPa, TS 570–700 MPa, equivalent strength class for pressure vessels
ChinaGB/T 713Q420R (formerly 18MnMoNbR)Q&T; YS ≥400 MPa, TS 570–720 MPa, similar alloy concept but strength overlap differs by thickness

Notes:

Welding: Preheating (typically 100–200°C) and low-hydrogen electrodes are recommended. PWHT may be applied depending on thickness and service requirements. Forming: Hot or cold forming is possible, but cold-formed parts may require subsequent stress relief. NACE Compliance: A537 CL2 can be supplied with HIC-tested properties for sour service upon agreement. Ultrasonic Testing: Often specified per ASTM A577 or A578 for critical applications.
