ASTM A285 Grade B Pressure Vessel Steel Plate Introduction
ASTM A285 Grade B (A285GRB) is a carbon-manganese steel intended for welded pressure vessels and boilers up to a moderate strength level. It is supplied in the hot-rolled condition and is typically used for moderate and lower temperature service. The steel offers good weldability, ductility, and formability, making it suitable for riveted, bolted, or welded construction. With a minimum yield strength of 185 MPa (27 ksi) and tensile strength ranging from 345–450 MPa (50–65 ksi), A285 Gr B provides reliable performance for storage tanks, low-pressure vessels, and structural components in boiler applications. Its chemical composition is controlled to ensure adequate toughness after welding and during operation. The grade is widely recognized and accepted under the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code as SA285 Grade B. Plates are available in various thicknesses, typically up to 50 mm (2 in.), and can be normalized when improved toughness is required.

Notes:
Welding: A285 Grade B possesses good weldability with standard methods (SMAW, SAW, GMAW). Preheating is usually not required for thin sections, but may be recommended for thicker plates (>30 mm) to reduce cooling rate. Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) may be applied in accordance with relevant codes. Normalizing: When ordered, normalizing can improve uniformity and toughness; otherwise, plates are delivered in as-rolled condition. Test Certificates: Mill test reports showing chemical and mechanical results are normally provided. Additional testing (e.g., ultrasonic examination, impact test) can be specified through supplementary requirements.
