ASTM A283 Grade C ERW Pipe Introduction
ASTM A283 Grade C is a low-carbon structural steel widely used for general construction and fabrication. When produced as electric resistance welded (ERW) pipe, it is formed from hot-rolled steel coils, welded, and typically supplied in the as-rolled condition. Key characteristics include:
- Good weldability and formability
- Moderate strength suitable for structural applications
- Widely available and cost-effective
- Suited for non-critical fluid transmission and mechanical uses
This grade is covered by ASTM A283/A283M and is not intended for high-temperature or pressure vessel service unless specific additional requirements are met.

ASTM A283 Grade C ERW Pipe Similar / Alternative Material Recommendations
| Country/Region | Standard | Grade | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA | ASTM A36/A36M | A36 | Higher strength (≥250 MPa yield, 400–550 MPa tensile); often used interchangeably for structural shapes; may require thicker sections for equivalent strength |
| USA | API 5L | Grade B | Pipe grade specification; similar strength and composition; used for line pipe; may have additional toughness requirements |
| USA | ASTM A283/A283M | Grade D | Higher strength grade within the same standard; ≥230 MPa yield, 415–550 MPa tensile; suitable for slightly heavier structural demands |
| European Union | EN 10025-2 | S275JR | Higher strength (≥275 MPa yield, 410–560 MPa tensile); suitable for more demanding structural applications |
| Japan | JIS G3131 | SPHC | Hot-rolled mild steel sheet/coil; yield ~205–220 MPa typical; used for general forming; not a direct replacement for all structural applications |
Notes:
Fabrication and Welding: A283 Grade C has excellent weldability; no preheating is required for sections up to 25 mm thickness. Filler metals such as AWS E6013 or E7018 are compatible.
ERW pipe specific tests: Finished ERW pipes may be subject to flattening tests, flare tests, hydrostatic pressure tests, and non-destructive inspection (e.g., eddy current) as per ASTM A53 or API 5L if required.
Corrosion protection: Because it is mild steel, external and internal protective coatings (galvanizing, painting, epoxy lining) are recommended for corrosive environments.
Limitations: Not intended for high-temperature or high-pressure service unless verified by supplementary specification. For pressure applications, consult standards such as ASME B31 or API 5L.
