ASTM A131 Grade E is a carbon-manganese steel defined under ASTM A131/A131M for shipbuilding and marine applications. As a normal-strength hull structural steel, it combines a minimum yield strength of 235 MPa (34 ksi) with excellent notch toughness at low temperatures (KV₂ ≥ 27 J at -40 °C). The grade is fully killed, fine-grain-practised, and supplied in hot-rolled coil or plate form. It is suitable for welded fabrication of primary hull members, deck plating, and internals on vessels operating in cold environments. The controlled chemical composition ensures good weldability (CEV typically ≤ 0.38) and resistance to brittle fracture.

Certification: The material must be originally delivered with classification society certificates (e.g., ABS, DNV, LR) if required by the construction rules. Mill test reports (MTRs) shall include chemical, tensile, and impact results. Weldability: Grade E exhibits excellent weldability with standard shipyard welding processes (SAW, FCAW, SMAW) using low-hydrogen consumables and minimum preheat according to CEV. Corrosion protection: Standard marine coating systems and cathodic protection are required; the optional copper content (0.20% min.) can slightly improve atmospheric corrosion resistance but is not a substitute for coatings.
