ASME SA36/SA36M (SA36) is a carbon structural steel grade specified for pressure vessel and general structural applications. It is essentially the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code counterpart of the widely used ASTM A36. SA36 offers good weldability, machinability, and adequate strength for many construction and engineering uses. The material is typically supplied in the hot-rolled condition with a minimum yield strength of 250 MPa (36 ksi) and tensile strength between 400–550 MPa (58–80 ksi). Its balanced composition ensures reliable performance in riveted, bolted, or welded structures. The steel can be formed, punched, and drilled, making it versatile for plates, bars, and structural shapes. While originally a plain carbon grade, it may also be produced to meet low-alloy high-strength requirements under certain supplementary specifications.
