ABS Grade DQ47 is a high-strength quenched and tempered structural steel specifically designed for shipbuilding and offshore engineering. As a member of the ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) higher-strength hull structural steel family, DQ47 delivers a minimum yield strength of 460 MPa and excellent low-temperature toughness (longitudinal impact absorbed energy ≥ 41 J at -20 °C, D-grade). The steel is produced under tight control of carbon equivalent (typically ≤ 0.43% for ≤ 50 mm thickness) to ensure good weldability alongside high strength. Typical applications include critical hull members such as deck plating, sheer strakes, and strength deck structures exposed to high stress and low temperatures. The material is supplied in the quenched and tempered condition (Q), offering a refined microstructure and superior mechanical properties compared to conventional normalized or thermo-mechanically controlled processed steels.

The chemical composition of ABS Grade DQ47 steel shall comply with the limits specified by ABS Rules. Grain-refining elements (Nb, V, Ti) may be added singly or in combination. The carbon equivalent (CEV) is generally controlled to ≤0.40% for thickness ≤50 mm to ensure adequate weldability, but specific CEV limits may be defined in the contract.

  • Aluminum is required as a grain refiner and for deoxidation (Al≥0.015% for acid-soluble Al).

ABS Grade DQ47 Shipbuilding Steel Coil Mechanical Properties

The mechanical properties of ABS DQ47 steel are verified on test samples taken from the finished product. Properties are generally valid for thicknesses ≤ 50 mm. For thicknesses above 50 mm, the specification may be subject to agreement. Impact testing is conducted on Charpy V-notch specimens at -20 °C for transverse orientation. Longitudinal values are higher.

  • The bending test is performed with a former diameter specified as a multiple of the specimen thickness.
  • Elongation is measured on a gauge length of 5.65√S₀ (A5) for proportional test pieces.
