08CuPVRE is a phosphorus-copper-vanadium-rare earth alloyed weathering steel developed specifically for railway vehicles and containers under the Chinese standard TB/T 1979. By adding an optimum combination of Cu, P, V and RE (rare earth metals), the steel forms a dense, adherent protective rust layer after exposure to the atmosphere, which significantly retards further corrosion and eliminates the need for painting in many service environments. Key characteristics include:

Notes:
When welding 08CuPVRE, use matching weather-resistant consumables (e.g., AWS A5.1 E7018-W1 or equivalent with Cu and Ni) to ensure weld metal corrosion resistance matches that of the base metal. Preheating is not generally required for thicknesses up to 12 mm. The material can be cut and sheared with normal shop tools. For long-term outdoor exposure without paint, the design must allow proper wet-dry cycling to form the protective patina; avoid stagnant water pockets. The RE addition enhances longitudinal toughness and helps desulfurization, but it also requires careful steelmaking practice to achieve consistent recovery.
