Grade E SSAW Steel Pipe Introduction
Grade E SSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded) pipe is a type of electric-fusion welded steel pipe manufactured to ASTM A139/A139M. It is produced by spirally forming hot-rolled steel coil and welding the seam with submerged arc process, resulting in a strong, reliable pipe suitable for medium-pressure applications. Grade E offers a minimum yield strength of 360 MPa (52 ksi) and a minimum tensile strength of 485 MPa (70 ksi), combined with good weldability and ductility. Widely employed in water transmission, oil & gas pipelines, structural piling, and dredging, this material bridges the performance gap between standard Grade B and higher-strength microalloyed steels. The as-welded condition is typical, with optional stress relieving or normalizing for demanding services.

Grade E SSAW Steel Pipe Similar/Alternative Materials for Consideration
| Country/Region | Standard | Grade | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA | ASTM A53 | Type E, Grade B | Resistance welded pipe; lower strength (YS 240 MPa min.), but similar applications |
| USA | API 5L | X42 (L290) | Lower strength alternative if 360 MPa yield is not required |
| Europe | EN 10219 | S355J2H | Structural hollow section; YS 355 MPa; good for piling and structural use |
| USA | ASTM A252 | Grade 3 | Welded and seamless steel pipe piles; YS 310 MPa min., used in marine structures |
| China | GB/T 3091 | Q345B | Welded pipe for low pressure fluid; YS 345 MPa; service conditions differ |
Notes:
ASTM A139 Grade E was originally intended for electric-fusion welded pipe with minimum yield strength of 52 ksi. Modern projects often reference API 5L X52 or ISO 3183 L360 for new SSAW pipelines. For existing assets, this grade remains serviceable and interchangeable with proper engineering evaluation. Supplementary toughness testing (e.g., Charpy V-notch) should be specified if low-temperature service is expected.
