EN10025-2 S275J2 SSAW Pipe Introduction

S275J2 is a hot‑rolled non‑alloy structural steel grade defined in EN 10025‑2. It offers a minimum yield strength of 275 MPa for thickness ≤16 mm and guaranteed impact energy of 27 J at −20 °C (longitudinal direction). This steel is often processed into spiral submerged arc welded (SSAW) pipes for structural and pipeline applications. It provides excellent weldability, good ductility, and reliable toughness, making it suitable for demanding welded constructions. The material is typically delivered in as‑rolled, normalized rolled, or thermomechanically rolled condition.

EN10025-2 S275J2 SSAW Pipe Mechanical properties

Properties are based on EN 10025‑2 for S275J2 and apply to the base material before pipe forming. For SSAW pipes, the seam weld and heat‑affected zone shall also comply with relevant pipe standard (e.g., EN 10219 for cold‑formed welded structural hollow sections or API 5L for line pipe). Values below assume testing at ambient temperature unless stated otherwise.

EN10025-2 S275J2 SSAW Pipe Application Introduction

The combination of good weldability, moderate strength, and low‑temperature toughness makes S275J2 an economical choice for SSAW pipes and structural hollow sections. It can be formed, welded, and galvanised without significant loss of properties. Typical applications are found in infrastructure and construction sectors.

Product Applications: Spiral submerged arc welded (SSAW) pipes, Longitudinal welded (LSAW) pipes, Welded structural hollow sections (square, rectangular, circular), Structural beams and columns in steel buildings, Pipe piles for foundation work

Processed into products: SSAW pipe used for water mains, drainage, and slurry transport, Pipe piles for bridge abutments and retaining walls, Structural bracing members in high‑rise buildings, Welded frameworks for material‑handling equipment, Support legs for offshore platforms (secondary structural parts)

Application industries: Civil engineering and construction, Oil and gas pipeline (low‑pressure fluid transport), Water and sewage conveyance, Offshore structural platforms (non‑critical members), Renewable energy structures (wind turbine towers, solar support frames), Shipbuilding and marine structures

EN10025-2 S275J2 SSAW Pipe Materials with similar mechanical properties

Country / RegionStandardGradeComparison notes
ChinaGB/T 700Q275DYield ≥275 MPa (≤16 mm), impact 27 J at −20 °C; similar concept but may differ in P/S limits and CEV control
United StatesASTM A36A36Yield ~250 MPa (lower than 275), no guaranteed low‑temperature impact; widely used structural steel
JapanJIS G3101SS400Yield ~245 MPa, tensile comparable, but toughness not guaranteed at −20 °C; for less demanding applications
IndiaIS 2062E275 DYield min 275 MPa, impact at −20 °C; close to S275J2, may have slightly different Cu and microalloying limits

Notes:

When S275J2 is used for SSAW pipe, the pipe manufacturing standard (e.g., EN 10219 for cold‑formed welded structural hollow sections or API 5L for line pipe) may impose additional requirements on weld metal quality, hydrostatic testing, and dimensional tolerances. The base material must still comply with EN 10025‑2.
For critical applications, supplementary requirements such as ultrasonic testing of plates, through‑thickness properties (Z‑quality), or restricted chemical compositions can be agreed with the steel supplier.
The material can be supplied with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance (weathering steel) by specifying higher Cu and Cr contents, but this falls outside the standard S275J2 grade and requires a separate EN 10025‑5 designation.
