ASME SA283 Grade B Carbon Steel Coil Introduction
ASME SA283/SA283M Grade B is a low and intermediate tensile strength carbon steel intended for structural applications. It is supplied as hot-rolled coils, sheets or plates and is widely used in welded, bolted and riveted constructions. Grade B offers good weldability and formability combined with moderate strength.

Additional remarks:
- For ASME boiler and pressure vessel code construction, the material must be used within the design limits specified in ASME Section II, Part D. Grade B is acceptable for moderate temperature service, typically below 370 °C.
- Welding procedures should follow AWS D1.1 or ASME Section IX. Low-hydrogen electrodes are recommended for thicker sections to avoid hydrogen-induced cracking.
- If improved impact toughness is required, the steel can be supplied in killed condition with optional Charpy testing; this must be explicitly ordered.
- Surface finish and flatness tolerances comply with ASME SA6/SA6M. Coil products may exhibit slight spring-back after uncoiling.
- This grade is not intended for heat treatment quenching and tempering; typical applications are in the as-rolled or normalized condition.
